Surviving cancer differs
from healing with many other health issues as recovery may not be
the end of the cancer experience. For some, cancer becomes a
chronic condition requiring periodic treatments. Others may go into
long-term remission. For most, no one can tell them that their
cancer will not recur. This is a most frightening truth to live
with. Cancer and its treatment also can be toxic, leaving one with
unique health needs that require lifelong surveillance and
valuation. Many cancer patients report that recovering from the
social and emotional trauma of the disease can take longer than
recuperating from some of the treatments.
The mission of
HealthLinks is to be the impetus for a paradigm shift in cancer care
and Greater Boulder Community site for
“Moving Through and Beyond Cancer Care to Wellness."
Every patient diagnosed with cancer deserves to have this journey
recognized in its entirety and to have cancer survivorship be
recognized as a distinct phase of his or her treatment.
The
Colorado Cancer Plan 2005-2010 recognizes the importance of
rehabilitation in the quality of life of a cancer survivor. “Cancer
survivors should receive rehabilitation during treatment to preserve
and restore their functional capacity through exercise, symptom
management and pain control. Post treatment survivors should have
access to therapies helping to restore daily routines, achieve a
healthy lifestyle through exercise, symptom management and
mobility.
The recurrence phase should include educating cancer survivors about
the impact of recurrence, offering supervised programs to restore
function and preventing decline while assisting individuals in
maintaining activity and quality of life. During the end of life
phase, rehabilitation efforts center around helping individuals and
family members del with issues of mobility training, good body
mechanics, assistive devices, managing pain through
non-pharmacologic means, controlling symptoms, maintaining
independence and quality of life.” Survivorship Care Plans to
address these issues in a more coordinated way than our current care
system provides. |
