Lifestyle Network - Nutrition & Cooking Series
In a nation of little time and less money, we wondered how we go about cooking meals for our families when those meals need to be fast, healthy and not boring. Because this is a common issue in most households, we decided to focus our cooking classes this year on eating locally, based on a Mediterranean diet.
Eating locally seems to be a popular all over the country, and we wanted to find out how we could change our lifestyles to easily accommodate this shift in the way we put food on the table. Helping us in our endeavor is Raymond Amos, owner and farmer of My Mamma’s Hat Farm in Niwot. Raymond will be providing fresh, local ingredients for our classes.
This year we are focusing our classes on using local ingredients to create dishes with a Mediterranean flare. Each class will explore the different foods in season from our local farmers and use those ingredients to create flavorful dishes based on the Mediterranean diet. These classes are not about dieting, but learning how to eat more healthily.
There are many reasons why we based our classes on a Mediterranean diet, and in each class we will explore why people living around the Mediterranean live longer, have lower risks of both heart disease and cancer all while enjoying a varied, healthy and flavorful diet!
In each class you will learn how to:
- buy, prepare and enjoy locally grown foods
- prepare a Mediterranean diet and to learn the benefits of this cuisine
- create and enjoy flavorful dishes based on the cuisine of a different country
- prepare easy dishes everyone in your family will enjoy
